On a tent camping trip, a quality tent is essential; the Kelty Trail Dome 6 is just such a beautiful piece of equipment. While rated as a six person tent, this cozy, one-room shelter will sleep three to four adults comfortably if you usually use an airbed under your sleeping bags. The design is pretty standard for a dome tent, but it’s in the fit, finish and details that this tent excels. Here are some more positive aspects to consider:
1. The layout is a square 10′ by 10′ with a substantial 6′ center height. The tent hooks onto the poles with color coordinated clips. One person can setup this tent, but securing the rainfly does require a little finesse because it’s big and slippery.
2. The rainfly provides great coverage on the sides, and there are plenty of velcro stays and guyouts to make the tent secure in a substantial wind and rain storm. Other tents went down while this tent stayed up keeping its occupants under cover. Large ventilation panels of no-see ‘um netting on each side are located well up under the sides to protect from rain and snow, but their location does make it just a little less ventilated when there’s no moving air such as on a hot, summer night.
3. The bathtub floor has taped and sealed seams (standard on any high quality tent) and the floor extends well up the sides to give very good protection against water infiltration.
Some things that will make the tent more livable are light-reflective guywires such as the Kelty Triptease; the guylines that come with the tent are black nylon and impossible to see at dusk let alone at night. Also, an available footprint for the tent from Kelty does make it a lot easier to setup the tent while adding a necessary layer of protection under the floor.
It seems everyone who has done tent camping has had some bad experience with inclement weather, but fortunately this tent is part of the solution rather than part of the problem. No tent is perfect, but if you like camping, this tent helps you get a good night’s sleep so you have more energy for the “roughing it” part of your adventure. Have fun!

I bought this because we live in southern California and I was sick of dealing with an umbrella on our windy beaches. This tent goes up quickly and packs up quickly. The pockets on the side filled with sand easily keep the tent in place and are no problem to empty when you’re ready to go. The shades allow you to see out, but keep the area inside the tent nice and cool. You can leave the zipper front open for a breeze or close it up to block most of the wind. Fits three adults laying down very comfortably and there’s no stooping down because the tent is nice and tall. My one complaint is that bugs fly in and then can’t figure out how to leave. They gather along the screen, so they aren’t a nuisance – just kind of gross. We have gotten many compliments on the tent and I’m looking forward to a nice summer on the beach because of it. Highly recommended!
